12/17/1950-9/9/2005 |
This
humble, gentle man died September 9, 2005 when his truck
was hit by an improvised explosive device in Iraq. He
was commander of a convoy of tanker trucks delivering
fuel to military bases. He was a civilian contractor who
believed in his mission, our troops and our president
and wanted to be a part of something that made a
difference. He was born December 17, 1950 and
lived in Bradford, PA until his early 20s when he moved
to York, PA. He began driving truck in 1971 and had a
30+-year history of driving over-the-road without a
chargeable accident. In 1984, he and his wife Beverly
moved to Georgia and in 1998 to Florida. He did not have
any children. He enjoyed riding motorcycle most of
his life and owned several Harley Davidsons. Long rides
in the country were his favorite kind of ride. He never
tired of watching sunrises and sunsets. In the early
1990s, motorcycles were replaced with sailboats. He
loved the quietness of moving through the water under
sail. Sunrises and sunsets were even more beautiful on
the water. His desire was to live aboard a boat when he
retired and sail the Caribbean. He loved pizza,
ice cream and chocolate muffins. His laughter was
contagious. His words were few, but when he spoke, they
were wise words. He was a trustee at Northside Baptist
Church, a tireless worker, keeping the grounds
beautiful. His actions demonstrated his faithful
stewardship of God’s gifts. Over the years, this
phenomenal man has touched hearts and minds all over the
world; family, childhood friends, riding companions,
fellow sailors and newly made friends who stood side by
side with him supporting our troops in a hostile
environment. He was a hero, a term that he would not
want applied to him because in his mind, he was just
doing his job. He is survived by his wife Beverly,
mother Kathleen Carnes, sister Rita Bergen and extended
family that includes five nieces, three nephews,
mother-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in law, aunts,
uncles, and cousins. Loved by all, he will be sorely
missed. |
